Controversies • His name appeared as one of the main perpetrators in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. A complainant named Jagdish Kaur was the first to file a complaint against Sajjan Kumar. Witnesses including Chamkaur and Fota Singh said in their complaint that on 1-2 November 1984, it was Sajjan Kumar who incited a mob, which killed 6 Sikhs in Delhi Cantt Area. However, due to lack of evidence, no hearing could proceed against Sajjan Kumar.

• Charges of murder, dacoity, and criminal conspiracy have also been framed against him.
• After the recommendations of the Nanavati Commission; in which Sajjan Kumar’s name appeared as one of the culprits, a charge sheet was filed against him in 2005.
• For his involvement in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, Sajjan Kumar was opposed to contesting the 2009 Lok Sabha Elections.
• When Karkardooma Court evicted Sajjan Kumar of all charges in 2013, the Sikh Communities heavily condemned the court’s decision, and soon after the court’s decision, a shoe was thrown at the Justice J. R. Aryan in the courtroom; the incident is known as the “Joota Kaand” in the popular media.
• In 2017, Modi Government formed a SIT to re-investigate the 1984 anti-Sikh riots Case and Sajjan Kumar was called for many times by the SIT to interrogate him.
• On 17 December 2018, the Delhi High Court sentenced Sajjan Kumar to life imprisonment for his role in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.
