John Noakes was born on March 6, 1934, in Shelf, West Riding of Yorkshire, Inglaterra. He was born as John W. Bottomley to Sallie Hinchcliffe and Arthur W. Bottomley. He was educated at Rishworth School where he exceeded expectations in crosscountry running and gymnastics. His folks separated when he was nine and he went to live with his grandmother.
