Some Lesser Known Facts About Denis Mukwege

  • Denis was born into a middle-class religious family of 11 lede.
  • In sy kinderjare, he used to visit sick people with his pastor father, which inspired him to become a doctor.
  • After completing his degree in medicine in Burundi, he started practising at a Christian Hospital in Lemera, South Kivu.
  • While working as a paediatrician, he saw various cases where women were suffering from pain and complications after birth, which inspired him to travel to France to study gynaecology and obstetrics.
  • in 1999, he founded the Panzi Hospital in Bukavu; with an aim to cure survivors of Congo’s epidemic of sexual violence.
