His career ignited when he was selected as the first draft pick in the history of the expansion of Ottawa Senators (2nd overall in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft). Hij scoorde 79 points for which he was considered as the team’s brightest young star. He was assigned as the captain in the 1998-89 seizoen. In the same season, hij scoorde 94 points and was runner-up for both Hart Trophy for the NHL’s most valuable player, and being named in NHL Second Team All-Star. Echter, his time at Senators was tumultuous.
So in 2001, he was sent to the New York Islanders by signing a massive contract worth $87.5 Miljoen. He was considered overpaid and virtually untradeable. In juli 20, 2007, Yashin signed a contract with Lokomotiv Yaroslavl of the Russian Super League. He then signed with SKA St. Petersburg of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) in 2009. Later, in 2011 he signed a one-year contract with CSKA Moscow which was his final team of his career.
After retirement, he was appointed as general manager of Russian National Women’s Hockey Team in 2012.
