He played at the 1992 World Junior Championship and at the Olympics in the same year. Moreover, he was drafted 81st overall by the Los Angeles Kings in the 1991 NHL Entry Draft. He debuted on October 6, 1992, against the Calgary Flames. Furthermore, he finished second among rookie defenseman in points with 48 in his rookie season with the Kings. Zhitnik was traded on February 14, 1995, to the Buffalo Sabres. He became a key player to help the Sabres win Northeast Division in the 1996–97 NHL season.
